An airborne conditioning readiness checklist for civilians

Before adding intensity, use a general readiness conversation to identify workload, recovery and questions requiring professional advice.

Avoid turning a checklist into a pass score

A civilian questionnaire cannot establish whether someone will pass P Company. The Army determines its own physical and mental assessments. This checklist instead asks ordinary planning questions: what exercise have you been doing consistently, how well do you recover and what do you need to clarify with qualified professionals?

Look at a normal month

List running, general strength work, walking, sport, work commitments and rest. Notice how much time your actual life provides. Sudden dramatic increases may create avoidable fatigue or injury risk; a qualified coach can help set an appropriate progression for your circumstances.

03 / 05

Use health guidance in context

The NHS publishes general adult activity guidelines that include aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening. They are health guidance, not airborne military standards. Someone with existing pain or medical concerns should seek suitable clinical advice rather than using internet targets as a diagnosis.

04 / 05

Separate skills from credentials

General endurance, coordination, consistency and recovery awareness are civilian skills. Knowledge of the Army training route is useful, but not equivalent to selection competence or military authorisation. If you are serving, your unit's training and medical staff take precedence.

Know what to do with the result

The outcome of a useful checklist is a discussion: continue with general activity, ask for a properly qualified coach's advice, address a recovery concern or seek official route information. It should never display 'ready for P Company' after ticking five boxes.

A useful next step

Write one paragraph for each of the following: current activity, constraints, recovery and unanswered official questions. Take the first three to a qualified coach where appropriate, and the last to military staff.
